In the age of 'self help,' hypnosis has proven its popularity.

Self-help, as a movement, a philosophy, and a practice, has made a terrific difference in the lives of many millions of people worldwide . With the rise in access to info that the net has brought, it is now even increasingly easy for people to find ways to take their lives into their own hands, treating themselves and their personalities as uncompleted work. Nasty habits, negative thoughts and defeatist thinking, even depression and crippling fear, are now seen as obstacles to be overcome, instead of impassable barriers to success.

One of the most popular and effective tools which the self-help movement has turned to in its ceaseless quest for self-perfection and upward progress is self-hypnosis- a deliberate motivation of a trance-like state where the practitioner tries to manage the power of the subconscious to recognise and correct negative patterns of thought and replace these with hopeful, powerful options which permit a wider and more satisfying engagement with life.

Self-hypnosis is distinct from conventional hypnosis in that it while the hypnotic state it causes is the same, self-hypnosis does away from the requirement for a hypnotist to put its subject under, replacing this pro control with a collection of CDs, audio tapes, MP3s or videos, which are designed as steering materials which show the user a path to proceed along, down thru progressive stages of relaxation into the hypnotic state, where visualisation and positive affirmations are used to implant positive angles and personal resolutions, before the topic steadily and deliberately brings themselves back up into a waking state, relaxed and refreshed and carrying the positive statements inserted inside their subconscious. In this manner, the subject has utilized the relaxation materials to 're-program' themselves with statements and perspectives that they wish to adopt. Because this programming has taken place in the hypnotic state, the subconscious mind is more at once engaged with these statements.

This may sound a bit esoteric, but is actually common sense- everyone, I think, has experienced truths that they know intellectually, but have not felt to be true.
These, naturally, change in quality, but all the effective ones use the same basic process to help the user to the same goal- the unlocking of one's one mind, and the realization that we will shape our selves, work on ourselves and take steps to correct those things about our own personalities that we do not like. In this, hypnosis is the purest form of self-help available.
